The first monograph for Polish-born Agnieszka Brzezanska, this artist book offers a compelling compilation of her mysterious, subtle and deeply felt photographs, paintings and videos. The book’s title was taken from a poster for a Picasso exhibition that the artist photographed and used as the poster for her own show – creating a ready-made accentuating the rain-smudged lettering of the original poster. The peach-colored cover of this soft-cover book – with its image of a kinked heart referring to her heart paintings and her musical video, Heart Play – makes the book seem like something discovered at a kiosk on the banks of the Seine. The monograph was developed while Brzezanska was a guest of the Berlin DAAD artist-in-residence program. With a compelling essay by Andrew Renton.

“Do we actually want the future to be totally unlike the present, or only a little bit different?” Polish artist Agnieszka Kurant’s works raise this question and more. Some of her work invokes a world of small tricks, magic sticks, cloud busters, barking birds and exits as entrances. Other pieces examine the big picture of the future, such as global politics in the year 2020 as presented by the authoritative voice of the New York Times. Kurant meticulously prepared a future-themed issue for the paper with the help of a professional clairvoyant and several journalists. Her big-picture works speak less about the small differences of the near future than the potential for absolute difference – events after which the world might never be the same again. Includes texts by Raimundas Malasauskas, Jean-Charles Massera, Jan Verwoert and an interview by Neville Wakefield with the artist.

Emergency Exit, the installation exposed and explored in this full-color book, merges the disciplines of architecture and art within a collaborative dialogue between artists Agnieszka Kurant and Aleksandra Wasilkowska, who represented Poland with this project at the 12th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice in 2010. In their essay, the artists present the ideas behind Emergency Exit and the concept of “urban portable holes,” and such artifacts as Utopian Ruins and Fictional Sports. An archive of reference images, theories, films, and documents inspire and support their work within expanding and interrelated subjects; an all-star team of critics add commentary, and Hans Ulrich Obrist conducts a dual interview with Kurant and Wasilkowska.
