AN ATLAS OF AGENDA’S
Mapping the Power, Mapping the Commons
Bureau d’Etudes
Bureau d’études is a Paris-based conceptual art group founded in 1998 by Léonore Bonaccini and Xavier Fourt. They produce maps that depict relationships and ownership ties between, for example, transnational organizations and the European Union. The maps typically reveal links between think tanks, financial firms, regulatory bodies, intelligence agencies, media groups, networks of consumer distribution, weapon makers and satellite companies. Other maps explore anarchist positions, dissident knowledge producers, squats and charts that relate to various forms of non-capitalist exchange. Reproduced in this large-scale publication is not only a concentrated overview of the collective’s work, but a chance to intimately experience their intricate and information layered maps. Despite their heady content, infographics are anything but bland and computer-generated. Bright colors, lively type and a profusion of overlapping forms and networked systems approximate the messy and ultimately human source of knowledge. Here, knowledge—and open access to it—is paramount.
