INEKE HANS
Was Ist Loos?
Juliane Bischoff & Nicolaus Schafhausen (Eds.)
Current relevance characterizes the hybrid design objects of contemporary Dutch designer Ineke Hans (b. 1966). Taking account of today’s social developments, the blurring of boarders between work and personal life, and challenges created from a networked, globalized world, Hans asks questions about the functionality of contemporary design and how people, objects, and spaces interact. Celebrating the designer’s productive career is her first solo exhibition at the Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna, along with an informative and excellently designed catalog by Irma Boom Office. The exhibition—its title a pun merging the German phrase for “What’s going on?” with the name of architect Adolf Loos—provided an overview of Hans’s work, while exploring the present and the future of design. Alongside images of her work are essays by Deyan Sudjic, director of the London Design Museum, and Bart Lootsma, professor of architectural theory at the University of Innsbruck, plus a conversation between Hans and Oliver Stratford, editor in chief of Disegno Magazine.

NOMA
In 2017, the internationally renowned Japanese restaurant noma closed its space in an eighteenth-century harborside warehouse in Copenhagen after fourteen years. As noma prepared to open its new site in 2018, Wright presented a special auction of collected pieces from its first groundbreaking restaurant. Carefully considered and featuring unique pieces produced by artists and designers from across the Nordic region, the auction included interior furnishings, décor, and tableware that helped estab- lish noma’s distinct aesthetic. The sale contained nearly five hundred lots—items such as classic chairs by Hans J. Wegner and J.L. Møller, hand-carved wooden cutlery, ceramic dishes, and a custom twenty-foot-long table from the restaurant’s private dining room. In honor of the sale, Wright published both a historical document and auction catalog. As with the recent sale of the interior elements from New York City’s iconic Four Seasons restaurant, designed by Mies van der Rohe in 1959, Wright has once again created an invaluable document of noma’s exceptional design aesthetic.
