INFOGRAPHICS DESIGN

Only the Tokyo-based design publisher BNN would create a book on how to spruce up boring graph-driven Power Point presentations. Infographics Design is an indispensable resource for designers, public relations personnel and anyone who needs to condense and convey statistical information in today’s information society. This beautifully illustrated compendium of infographics and data visualization is divided into five parts including Graphs and Charts, Maps, Pictograms, Motion Graphics and Interactive Graphics. Focusing on expressive methods for use with infographic and data visualization, it presents hundreds of creative designs from around the world. Each entry is referenced with a brief text on its intent and use. In the introduction, Takashi Murakami of Kartz Media Works, who runs the world’s largest infographic community website, Infogra.me, discusses how to create infographics and suggests some key points when creating these effective but engaging digital designs.

SHIRO KURAMATA AND HIROSHI SUGIMOTO

Works from the Absent Past

Selected objects by Shiro Kuramata, one of Japan’s most important 20th-century furniture designers, are elegantly presented together with a suite of photographs by Hiroshi Sugimoto in this small but precious auction catalog. The pairing, including work from two of Kuramata’s most important commissions—Esprit House and Laputa Restaurant—and seven of Sugimoto’s Seascapes, highlights the artists’ aesthetic common ground. Each artist explored the temporal nature of light and time’s passage through his work. Kuramata was known for his use of industrial materials such as wire steel mesh and Lucite in his furnishings while Sugimoto, who was influenced by Duchamp, Dada and Surrealism, considers his photographs as a kind of time capsule, capturing the transience of life. A uniquely elegant publication celebrating two of the most creative minds of the 20th century, designed in collaboration with Tamotsu Yagi.

ZAK KYES

Zak Kyes Working With…

Swiss-American “critical graphic designer” Zak Kyes is known for his thoughtful approach to design, especially with regard to collaboration. While billed as documenting Kyes’ first solo exhibition, this catalog from the Museum of Contemporary Art Leipzig is also a representation of the relationships formed by Kyes as he collaborates with his clients and partners, who include artists, architects, writers, curators, graphic designers and editors. Starting with curator Barbara Steiner, the small-format publication brings together a range of works by Kyes that have been expanded and enlivened by a host of collaborators, hence the book’s subtitle: Working With… .

Apart from studio projects, Kyes’ critical practice encompasses publishing, curating and creating sitespecific projects for and with art institutions. His work engages with publications as sites for debate and exchange rather than documentation. He currently teaches in the MA program at ECAL (L’École cantonale d’art de Lausanne) and the Architectural Association School of Architecture, London, where, since 2006, he has also been Art Director. Among Kyes’ many international exhibitions and awards, his London design studio Z.A.K. won the Inform Award for Conceptual Design in 2011 and has twice been awarded the prize for the Most Beautiful Swiss Book.

This publication features contributions and collaborations from Can Altay, Charles Arsène-Henry, Shumon Basar, Richard Birkett, Andrew Blauvelt, Edward Bottoms, Wayne Daly, Jesko Fezer, Joseph Grigely, Nikolaus Hirsch, Maria Lind, Markus Miessen, Michel Müller, Radim Peško and Barbara Steiner.
