Co-founder of the Arab Image Foundation, Akram Zaatari is an endlessly creative curator and artist exploring the history and politics of the Middle East through photography. In this engrossing book, he invents a “conversation” with an imagined Israeli filmmaker, and uses it to explore the encounter between subjective, personal history and violent historical events. Zaatari looks at the history of the Israeli wars against Lebanon through letters, photographs and personal stories by former Lebanese prisoners in Israel, which the artist then presents in videos. All of these elements are perfectly edited to tell a deep and engaging story. CHEN ZHEN

Chen Zhen (1955–2000) is largely recognized as one of the most important international Chinese-born, Paris-based conceptual artists from the global art scene. A member of the Chinese avant-garde, Chen chose exile over political repression, leaving home for Paris in 1986. After some years in seclusion, he began showing his pioneering “open sculptures,” which swiftly found international acclaim. Chen’s pieces present utopias of multicultural dialogue, poetic landscapes of unusual material alliances, hybrids and new connections between Eastern traditions and Western artistic vocabulary. Packaged in a raw, pressed-cardboard binding, this simple but elegant catalog documents the eponymous exhibition at the Rockbund Art Museum, Shanghai (2015) covering his massive installations, personal notebooks and sketches of existing and unrealized projects from 1997 to 2000. A thoughtful essay by curator Hou Hanru contextualizes and personalizes the artist’s ideas and methods. Chen’s work has been featured internationally including solo shows at ICA, Boston and P.S. 1, NY.

PETER ZIMMERMANN

Works Since 1987

This is the first truly retrospective catalog to showcase German artist Peter Zimmermann’s entire artistic production since the 1980s, comprehensively documenting his book jackets, poster hoardings, box objects, and sculptures as well as the broad spectrum of his lacquer paintings. (Included just for fun is the fashion line presented by Tara Jarmon in Paris in 2007 which was based on Zimmerman’s paintings.) Zimmermann has always explored the possibilities of chance, used consciously as compositional medium or active invocation, to create an ever-expansive form of pictorial abstraction. “Contingency is life’s governing principle!” declares this versatile artist, whose works range widely but always are the result of conscious artistic decisionmaking. PETER ZIMMERMANN

German artist Peter Zimmermann (b. 1956) is one of the outstanding international protagonists of conceptual painting. Recently he radically transformed the New Art Museum in his hometown of Freiburg into a massive, integrated, walk-in artwork using the floor as canvas and pastel ground to his spectacular new series of oil paintings. The elegantly designed softcover exhibition catalog features swirling painted epoxy floors and reflected soft colors as background to his new paintings in its entirety. Since the mid-1980s, Peter Zimmermann has manipulated documents such as photos, film stills, and diagrams with digital filters, transferring these onto canvas using several layers of epoxy resin. It is in the context of intensive study of digital media and their impact on contemporary painting that the complex and colorful cosmos of Peter Zimmermann unfolds. With essays by curators Christine Litz and Didem Yazici and an interview with Peter Zimmermann by writer Till Briegleb.

BEAT ZODERER

UM 5 ECKEN (Around 5 Corners)

Zürich-born artist Beat Zoderer (b. 1955), has long chosen to work outside of the parameters of modernist greats such as Max Bill and others. His materials of choice are often familiar, sourced from the general hardware store and kept in tact when used to fabricate his sculptures and wall works. The pieces often embrace repetitive geometric forms which are accentuated by his easy use of bright colors. The new 2017 release from the Kienbaum Artists Book series is a very special book in a box designed by Zoderer. Featured are his newest works of interspersed pentagons. The box is filled with 76 sheets of brilliantly printed color forms each printed sheets of velum and interspersed with poems by Klaus Merz. The sheets are folded and tied together with cord creating a wonderful artist object and book. Zoderer had a solo show the Cleveland Institute of Art in 2013 and continues to exhibit internationally.
