WHEN IS THE DIGITAL IN ARCHITECTURE?

Andrew Goodhouse (Ed.)

What led architects to integrate digital tools into their practices? To understand the point of departure for the digital in architecture, the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA), through its research program, Archaeology of the Digital, collected archival records of 25 projects realized between the late 1980s and the early 2000s. If the digital is a condition made possible by the conceptual foundations of digital media (and not necessarily by digital media itself), the boundaries of the digital moment—when it began and under what circumstances—expands. This fascinating publication brings together 14 stories pertaining to the origins of the digital in architecture. Addressing specific changes in ways of thinking about architecture, building and cities, as well as the shifts in technology that resulted from these changes, When Is the Digital in Architecture? investigates the complex beginnings of the digital in architecture. Contributions by architects and theorists Stan Allen, Phil Bernstein, Nathalie Bredella, Mario Carpo, Wolfgang Ernst, Marco Frascari, Peter Galison, Orit Halpern, Greg Lynn, Antoine Picon, Molly Wright Steenson, Bernard Tschumi, Mark Wigley and Andrew Witt.

WORKING WITH ARCHITECTONIC DNA

Karin Christof

Using the 40-year-long building project otherwise known as Amsterdam’s international airport, Schiphol, as a departure point, this absorbing collection of writings looks at the phenomenon of designing complex architectural projects that require continuous modification. While DNA is a concept from biology, the 17 contributors to the book make the case that for a project like Schiphol to be a design success, it must be based on a simple and flexible set of rules, its “DNA.” An eloquent group of architects, urban planners, philosophers and designers investigate the DNA metaphor in a particularly rich set of texts, and Dutch architect Jan Benthem – who has been designing for Schiphol since the 1960s –offers an epilogue. First in a new series from the Podium voor Archtectur.
