LETTERA, VOL. 1
A Standard Book of Fine Lettering
Armin Haab and Alex Stocker
Anyone entranced by the magic of fonts will want to add these ultra-cool, midcentury reprints from the archives of Swiss publisher Niggli to their library. The now-classic Lettera series was a sensation when this book first appeared in 1954, curated by Swiss photographer-bookbinder-papermaker Armin Haab with typographer Alex Stocker. Volume 1 of the four-volume font library contains 62 alphabets and 190 examples of words, the majority designed by Stocker. They range from classic serif and sans-serif faces to mind-bending retro display faces that are almost totally forgotten today. The Index lists faces by name and designer.

LETTERA, VOL. 2
A Standard Book of Fine Lettering
Armin Haab and Walther Hættenschweiler
In this reprint of the second volume of Lettera, first published in 1961, series editor Armin Haab is joined by type-design superstar Walter Hættenschweiler. Volume 2 includes 64 complete alphabets. Typeface freaks will appreciate the delicacy and detail of faces designed and fashioned by hand in the era before offset typography – and long before everyone had a list of “fonts” a mile long on their computer. The ornate display faces are amazing: check out Green Leaves, sprouting like a tree in the spring, and Grafik, an Art Deco marvel.
