BIRGIT MEGERLE

Birgit Megerle’s figurative and abstract paintings are characterized by an artificial, rigid and stage-like atmosphere. In this softcover exhibition catalog, the female characters featured in her works are posed with a determination to act, and while based in a tradition of representational painting, they are eerily unreal and remote. Despite their contemporary references, the works feel as though they have fallen out of time. The book includes photos of Megerle’s installations, in which the works are hung not only on the wall, but also laid on the floor or presented as mise en scène. Although the works contain figurative elements, comprehensible narratives do not unfold. Three comprehensive essays by Meike Behm, Dirk von Lowtzow and Vanessa Joan Müller round out this important exhibition catalog from the Kunsthalle Lingen.

FAUSTO MELOTTI

Douglas Fogle

The delicate, lyrical sculptures of Italian sculptor, installation artist and poet Fausto Melotti (1901–1986) are elegantly presented in an extensively illustrated compact catalog accompanying the 2016 exhibition of this distinguished sculptor’s work at Hauser & Wirth. An important figure in the development of mid-century European modernism, Melotti’s 60-year career encompassed work in a variety of materials, including brass, steel, fabric and ceramics. He was educated in Florence, where he met noted artists such as Lucio Fontana and was part of the Abstraction-Creation movement, founded in Paris in 1931 by van Doesburg to champion non-figurative art. In 1935, Melotti exhibited in the first group show of abstract art. His sculptures are in collections as broad and extensive as the Walker Art Center, MN; MoMA, NY; and the Tate Modern plus many more. In 1986, Melotti’s work was exhibited at the 42nd Venice Biennale and awarded the Golden Lion. Essay by independent curator Douglas Fogle.

KARINA MENDRECZKY

Preis der Kunsthalle Wien 2015

With delicate lyricism, emerging Hungarian artist Karina Mendreczky (b. 1988) creates fictional landscapes using light and shadow, theatrical lighting and graphic forms. Recipient of the 2015 Kunsthalle Wien Prize, Mendreczky created the installation, Thin Dream, at the Kunsthalle Wien. Silhouettes of acrylic trees, whose details were hand-carved with an etching needle, were projected onto the back wall of the gallery to create the impression of actual large-format drawings. Mendreczky draws on the techniques of graphic printing and stage design to remind us that nature cannot be reproduced. The accompanying exhibition catalog features a compact record of the installation including an essay by Bärbel Vischer, interviews with Lucas Gehrmann, and Kunsthalle director, Nicolaus Schafhausen plus a multi-page color insert of informative installation shots and details. An excellent document for a young and talented artist.

Mathieu Mercier

Everything But The Kitchen Sink

Andreas Baur & Konrad Bitterli (Eds.)

The work of French artist Mathieu Mercier, winner of the Prix Marcel Duchamp (2003), moves confidently between art and everyday culture exploring the relationship between contemporary mass-produced objects and early 20th-century art and aesthetics. This compact exhibition catalog features Mercier’s sculptural, photographic and wall-based works blending household and industrial materials with the colorful and highly controlled aesthetics of De Stijl and Russian Constructivism. One series of sculptures, Drum and Brass, re-creates classic Mondrian compositions out of black DIY shelving and primary-colored household objects such as plastic bins, extension cables and stationery folders. By creating a dialogue between utopian art and design icons and contemporary mass-produced objects, Mercier highlights the evolution of the meaning of “modernity,” from a social project to a capital gain. Essays by art historian Andreas Baur, curator Konrad Bitterli and art critic Marie Chènel.

OLAF METZEL

Coffee / Newspaper / Cigarettes

Matthia Löbke (Ed.)

German sculptor, object artist and draftsman Olaf Metzel aims at a direct encounter with the viewer and his social, urban and sociopolitical environment. In this extensively illustrated catalog, Metzel gathers together his latest group of works, Zeitungsarbeiten (Newspaper Works). Huge piles of aluminum plates, folded, bent and crumpled like discarded newspapers, are juxtaposed with soft white newspaper pages, seemingly frozen among the sharp, bulky metal. Viewers stand spellbound before work on the life and death of Amy Winehouse, inasmuch as the sculpture provides a direct and simple illustration of the hopelessness and anger imprinted on her life. Metzel has provoked extreme reactions since he first came to wide notice in 1987, and he continues to walk the line between historically-influenced fine art and pointed social criticism. Included are texts by Peter Richter, Bodo Fründt and Patrick Lambert.

OLAF METZEL – HANS VON MARÉES

One Approach

Joachim Kaak (Ed.)

Contemporary German sculptor Olaf Metzel (b. 1952) engages the work of the controversial 19th-century artist Hans von Marées (1837–1887) from a contemporary perspective in Olaf Metzel – Hans von Marées. Some consider von Marees a foundational figure in German modernism; others consider him a failed artist. The double exhibition and accompanying catalog present Metzel’s provocative sculptures next to von Marees’s figurative and mythological Roman-style paintings. Installation shots and details of both artists’ works in this compact publication confidently allow political worlds to collide: Metzel’s large aluminum work Lampedusa (2015), built of newspaper articles on the refugee issue, are juxtaposed with the poetic and divine gardens of von Marees’s historical painting. Olaf Metzel brings the oeuvre of his colleague up-to-date while at the same time proving the never-ending excitement of artistic provocation. Contributions by Michael Diers, Joachim Kaak, Konrad Laudenbacher, Bernhard Maaz, Olaf Metzel, Frank Schmidt and Bernhard Schwenk.
